Non-Stop Family Adventures

Good morning friends!  Hopefully everyone had a wonderful weekend.  I am here with a brief recap of some of our fun weekend adventures.  It looks to be another busy week ahead of me, just finishing up the school year.  That always means a lot of paperwork, and actually even some packing this year.  My school is being renovated, and they are actually tearing it down and building it back from the ground up.  So, what does that mean for us?  We are moving to another school for two years while they demolish and rebuild.  Moving is never fun, but it must be done, so we have been purging and packing like crazy.

Okay, I realize that no one probably needed to know that, so onward we go.  This weekend kicked off Saturday morning with none other than…………..

PAW Patrol Live!  When tickets went on sale last December, I knew that we had to take Gavin.  PAW Patrol is one of his favorite shows, and he is obsessed with all of the characters.  The show did not disappoint, either.  It was 75 minutes long (including a fifteen-minute intermission), so it was the perfect length to capture Gavin’s attention, but it was not so long that he became fussy.  Poor Gavin though….I promised him that he could get popcorn, but at $15 a bag, I had to renege on the deal.  I am far from frugal, but sometimes, common sense needs to prevail.

After the show, Kenny and Gavin went home, and I grabbed my friend Erin and headed to an event with the Raleigh Moms Blog.  The event was for expecting and/or new mothers, and Erin is expecting a baby girl on September 3rd (Gavin’s birthday!)  Funny story about Erin….I think her husband Michael may have been the first person to actually know I was pregnant.  We co-taught biology together, and on the day we were doing dissections, I had to leave the room because of the formaldehyde scent.  The smell had never bothered me before, and when I told Michael I must be pregnant, he obviously thought I was a nutso female.  Lo and behold, I took my trusty Dollar Store pregnancy test that evening, and BAM!  4 weeks pregnant.

The event was great!  Lots of information was provided for the expectant mothers, and there were great snacks and mocktails for the moms-to-be.  Plenty of door prizes were also given out….Erin nabbed a baby tub, and I received a gift certificate for an exercise facility.  Hopefully I can sneak there this summer when I have more time on my hands.

Afterwards, I met some of my girlfriends for dinner at Cowfish in the North Hills section of Raleigh.

Cowfish always has a booming crowd, so we headed over to World of Beer while we waited for our table to be ready.

Me and the girls!

After dinner, I headed back home, where Kenny and I sat out on the deck.  It was a gorgeous evening to relax outside.

Sunday morning kicked off early.  We had plans to meet my friend Barbara and her great-nephew Dylan at the Aloha Safari Zoo.  For those of you in the RDU area, be sure to check this gem out if you have not already done so.  Located under an hour from Raleigh (pretty close to Fayetteville, NC), the zoo is comprised of rescue animals, including giraffes, tigers, zebras, and bears.  The zoo is quite small, and is perfect for younger children.  (This is the second time that we have brought Gavin, and both times we spent just under two hours there).

There is a “safari” ride (approximately fifteen minutes long), where children can toss bread to the animals.  And as you can see, Gavin had a blast feeding Stretch the giraffe!

They don’t sell food, but they have shaded picnic tables available, so if you head to the zoo, be sure to pack a lunch.  Admission is $12 per/person, but children under 24 months are free.  Right now, they are only open on the weekends, but starting June 6th they are open Tuesdays-Sundays.

After the zoo, we drove back to Apex just in time for Touch-a-Truck, a yearly event in Apex.  This free event is perfect for toddlers!  Gavin spent well over an hour exploring fire trucks, excavators, police cars, etc.  He had a blast “driving” the trucks, honking the horns, and maneuvering all of the controls.

He was pretty much in little-boy heaven.

Gavin and his buddy, Dylan.  Gavin loves chasing after him and copying everything that he does, and Dylan is so sweet with him.  Best buds!

We decided to skip nap/quiet time yesterday, and just rolled through the afternoon.  Next on the agenda……a cookout at our friend Cris’ house!

Cris is my brother-in-law’s best friend, and he has become a friend of Kenny and I’s as well.  He invited us over yesterday, as well as my sister and her crew.  We had a great time hanging out, chatting, and playing with Gavin.

Side note…..portrait mode on the new iPhone 7 plus is amazing.  My sister took some great pics yesterday!

Overall, it was an awesome weekend.  On the work front, I have a busy week, but I don’t have too much going on in the evenings.  I want to catch up on some reading, as well as watch Hidden Figures and Bridget Jones’ Baby.  Huge aspirations, I know.

Keep checking in this week!  And……if you have a baby/toddler, be sure to check back on Memorial Day.  I will be running a great giveaway that you won’t want to miss!

Heather 🙂
